Can I Buy Tax Liens Online?

There are a lot of things you can purchase online. Clothes, cars, furniture and even groceries can be purchased nowadays at the click of a button without leaving the comfort of your own home. In some cases, it is even possible to buy tax liens online. Not every state allows them to be bought online, though, but the numbers are growing.
Currently, it is possible only in Nebraska, Louisiana, Maryland, Arizona, Florida, Colorado, and Indiana. Even in the states that sell tax liens online, not every county will do so. The counties that will can be found pretty easily with a little online searching.
Like any investment, the first thing you will want to do is know as much as you can about what you're getting into before you spend your hard earned money. Luckily, most of the state's rules, regulations and laws will be readily available on the website that sells the liens.
One of the down-sides to buying online is that sometimes there isn't a lot of information available about the property that's for sale. Sometimes properties are sold with a batch number and very little description. As such, it is much more important to do your due diligence if you're going to buy online so that you don't end up with a bad piece of property.
Also, make sure to register early. Some states will require that you register weeks before the actual sale happens. This affords the county time to process the information as to who is eligible to purchase the tax liens online and who is not. Once you're registered, you're going to have to bid on the properties. A deposit is usually required, and sometimes there's a fee for registration that isn't refundable.
Once you've won the auction(s), the price of the property will usually be deducted from your debit account that day. Some states will allow for money wire purchases, though, and those are usually required within 1-2 days of the closing of the sale.
However you choose to buy is up to you, and the internet is a wonderful tool that can make things much quicker and easier once you're comfortable with the process.
